2012 Budget
Burlington Transit
The City is currently going through a major review of our bus
system. This is long term planning. It has been interesting for me
to note the repeated references to Plains Road in Aldershot. Transit
experts seem to feel that the #1 bus route (Plains) is the best
opportunity for significant enhancements to the Burlington Bus
system. Discussions so far have included the idea of making the
Aldershot bus an “express route” resulting in shorter waiting times
and faster trips. The #1 bus route is already the most frequently
used and financial best route in the City. It joins Mapleview Mall
and downtown Hamilton. No decisions have been made yet but it is
clear that Aldershot can look forward to more and better bus service
in the future.
Aldershot Community Honour Roll
Know somebody special? Consider nominating him or her for the
Aldershot Community Honour Roll. This program celebrates our history
through the stories of the remarkable people who have lived in
Aldershot. The program is now in its fifth year and has honoured
such people as former Mayor Mulkewich, the late RBG Director Dr.
Leslie Laking, columnist Mary Jane Boelhower, sporstman Frank Kretz
and others. Nominations for the Honour Roll are being received now.
Nomination forms can be download from this web site and must be
submitted by April 13th. This year’s Honour Roll inductees will be
celebrated at a reception on the evening of Thursday, May31st at Bay
Gardens. For tickets call 905-526-1501.

Flouride
Regional Council has voted to continue the use of flouride in our
water. I supported this decision. Council recently heard from two
dozen delegations on both sides of this issue during a 10 hour
marathon discussion. What struck me most was the significant number
of health care agencies who endorsed the use of flouride. These
included the World Health Organization, the Federal Health
Department, the Ontario Ministry of Health and many dental
associations. In my view we simply can not ignore their advice and
the decades of positive impact that flouride has had on the health
of our citizens. As the former Chairman of the Regional Health and
Social Services Committee I saw many reports indicating that
communities without flouride have higher cavity rates. In the end,
Halton’s Medical Officer of Health Dr. Bob Nosal predicted that
removal of flouride from our water would result in 100,000 more
cavities in our population.
